As long as they didn’t have a vengeful mother, we’ll be okay. The camp has gone through a lot of misfortune in the three years it has been operating, including the death of a camper last year. Hey, finally calling the head camp guy Uncle will make sense in one of these! Well, just for Holly anyway. He called her up to ask for some help and she accepted it out of kindness even though she isn’t the big fan of the outdoors. Her uncle Bill owns the place and it is currently struggling. We truly begin with our protagonist Holly Flynn as she is having to be a junior counselor at Nightwing. Well, this won’t have Billy so it’s already never gonna be as good. ….Wow, they were even reusing camp nicknames, huh? That is weirdly specific. “Before I’m through, everyone will be calling it “Camp Nightmare” So far we only know this person is at Camp Nightwing and wants to “make them pay”. At least this doesn’t give anything away this time. We’re gonna see a few of these mysterious notes that are only one page but still make up the chapter anyway. The book starts with a letter from an unknown person to someone they call chief. Not much more to say, a fairly striking cover. It’s mysterious and ya gotta love that moon in the background there. A solid image of this girl running from…something. Can it provide some of its own spooky summer fun? Let’s begin. With that said, let’s see how good this is. I like the idea that just living in Shadyside on average means you’ll never even be safe if you leave. Although in reality, this is the first one we’re covering that is set away from Shadyside. Will that carry over to Fear Street? You’ll see. Over in Goosebumps, they can be hit or miss but they typically at least have some quality to them. Stine loves him his camp stories, and we’ve covered a fast majority of the ones he has done. I read it back in like 2019 and knew I’d have to cover it just for being camp themed. And yes, that name was reused in Goosebumps because Stine is truly that creative. That name happens to be lifted from one of the books so of course that entry has to be the one I’m reviewing today. The second film is a camp themed slasher set at Camp Nightwing. You can see my review over on Letterboxd but until I eventually get to cover that in more detail, let’s move backwards to the actual books. That first movie is now out, with Part Two coming on the day this goes up. Our Summer of Fear event continues, as we spend these months reviewing some Fear Street stories.
